Global Media
Introduction

Today, the United States is the most important cultural center in the world. Hollywood has an 80-90% market share of the global film industry and animation studios such as Marvel and Disney. For music, America is also the birthplace of jazz, modern music, rock and roll, country music, and many other kinds of music.
However, in recent years, with the rise of other countries, especially from Asian countries and have a long history with new global ambitions, the global media and cultural hegemony of America have been challenged unprecedentedly. (Thussu, 2014) This assignment will discuss what America’s media hegemony is and how the rise of media in other countries has gradually shaken it.
America’s global media and culture hegemony
Since the end of the 20th century, America has influenced the world and touched all areas of the world. This has strengthened the U.S.’s hegemonic position and enriched the U.S.’s hegemonic thinking. America has always dominated the media industry. For example, Google, 21st Century Fox, The Walt Disney Company, and Time Warner are the top media companies that dominate American and global media. Currently, the United States accounts for one-third of the global media and entertainment industry, and Hollywood movies are currently one of the most popular media export products. Although their film production is not the highest, its global storyline, extensive distribution, and marketing help it to obtain the highest income. (Mishra & Kern-stone, 2019)
Now cultural hegemony has become an important issue, and it can become an essential factor influencing the economy and technology. America has turned media globalization into Americanization. It is the largest producer of mass cultural products. For the United States, media hegemony has made the entertainment industry one of the most critical areas of economic activity. Apart from the commercial and aerospace industries, the U.S. entertainment industry gets more profit from overseas sales than other industries. According to Kasiyarno(2014), as soft power, some American experts believe that cultural globalization is the most powerful engine for spreading American cultural values and shaping global civilization. The spread of American popular culture is very rapid. According to the Globalization101 organization, despite the Canadian government’s efforts to protect its own culture, American cultural products still dominate. (Maatougui, 2013)
Korean wave
Hallyu refers to the phenomenon of the Korean culture economy exporting popular culture, entertainment, music, T.V. series, and movies to the world. In the past two decades, Hallyu has continued to develop. Especially in the past five years, K-pop has exerted an increasing influence on the global audience.
In China, globalization is more tend to Koreanization. Since 1997, Korean T.V. dramas, music, movies, fashion, food, and beauty are all trendy in China. The popularity of the Korean Wave in China is the only example that people think threatens American culture’s dominance. (Park,2017)
- K-pop music
The export of Korean pop music has rapidly developed the Korean music industry, reaching an astonishing $5 billion industry. The Korean music industry has perfected the production of music into a passionate assembly line, with high-quality performances (especially dance), extremely exquisite aesthetics, and “in-house” studio producers, making Korean pop stars singing, Comedy, rap, dance, social commentary, and other aspects are excellent. (Romano,2018)
In recent years, Hallyu has been popular in Asia and has successfully occupied a vital position in the world. Twice’s “Likey” got over 100 million views on YouTube, “Gangnam Style” has more than 3 billion views on YouTube, once becoming the most viewed video in the history of the platform, but it was replaced in 2017.
Based on the Twitter’s year-end data, there were few moments on the site in 2017 that were not about K-pop boy groups, the 2017 music on Twitter is indeed dominated by Korean artists such as EXO and BTS. (Herman,2017) BTS is the most popular Korean pop group in the world. In 2017, their two songs on the Billboard Top 100 singles list, on the cover of the “Billboard” magazine, and even participated in the New Year’s Eve performance in Times Square, successfully entered the American culture.
- K-drama
In the past, Korean dramas were not very popular because they did not have English subtitles. The largest Korean drama platform in North America and South America, DramaFever, has solved this problem, making Korean dramas gradually popular all over the world. More than 2 million active users already use DramaFever to watch 40 hours of content each month.
According to the Korea Creative Content Agency (2014), there have 18 million American fans of Korean dramas. More than 35.9 percent were aged 16 to 20, probably the same group of people who promoted the rise of Korean pop music and led Korean skincare trends in North America.
Indian movies are booming around the world.
In recent years, Indian movies have attracted millions of people worldwide, and this number will continue to grow. Especially in the U.S. and Canadian markets, their influence and income have overgrown in the past few years. Indian films feature appealing global superstars, coupled with the support of affluent studios, and have gained millions of box office sales worldwide. According to CNBC (2018), the Indian film industry grew by 27% in 2017 and may reach $411 million by 2020. The increase in overseas box office income has also promoted the development of the Indian tourism industry, created new employment opportunities, and added value to the Indian economy through taxation. According to Cain’s report (2017), Indian movies are popular in America now, and this is based on changes in the demographic structure of North America, changes in the Indian market, and the viewing trend of Indian movie audiences, which has resulted in rapid growth in the influence and income of Indian films. In recent years, Indian Americans, one of the fastest-growing groups in America, have had a massive impact on the Indian film industry, with a successful Indian film in North America accounting for 10% or more of its global box office receipts.
Bollywood
India produces 1,500 to 2,000 films each year, making it the country with the largest number of films worldwide. The Indian film industry, headquartered in Mumbai, is also known as Bollywood. There is a growing audience of Indian movies around the world, and the role of Bollywood actors in Hollywood continues to grow. (Bhattacharjee, 2019)
Bollywood films’ popularity in China
As early as 1980, China introduced the Indian Bollywood film-Caravan, which has achieved great success in China and opened the door to other Indian films. Some Bollywood stars also gained many loyal fans in China. For example, Amir Khan, who appeared in 3 Idiots and Dangal, has achieved good box office results in China. Dangal is currently the highest box office Indian movie in China, with a box office of $183.3 million in China(mainland), which is more than twice as the local box office. He also served as an informal cultural ambassador between India and China, hoped to help “improve India-China relations and make foreign audiences more interested in understanding India.” Even in 2019, the Indian Embassy in Beijing announced that it has dramatically relaxed the e-visa policy for Chinese citizens, and leaders of the two countries held informal summits and other news. On the whole, India’s media culture can not only bring benefits but also enhance relations with other countries. (Bi, 2019)
Japanese pop media culture
Many years ago, Japan acquired an empire through durable military power and intelligent trade contracts. However, in the development of history, the country is no longer the same as before. It occupied the world in a different way-popular culture. Today, the influence of Japanese pop culture is most prominent in areas and technologies like film, animation, television, music, fashion, and manga.
Japanese animation
Over the past two decades, Japanese anime has entered mainstream American culture, further promoting its popularity. Famous cartoons such as “Sailor Moon,” “Dragon Ball,” and the most critical ” Pokémon” have influenced American young people’s love for anime. “It is estimated that Japanese animation has taken up 60% of the world’s animation, audiences can Know a lot about Japanese people and culture, which attracts people who want to know more and therefore visit Japan.
Artistic style is another reason of why Japanese animation’s popular. The style of Japanese animation is unique. Characters usually have big eyes and different hairstyles. In order to compete with Japanese rivals, many American production companies have adjusted their production styles, such as “The Legend of Korra.” (Japan INFO, 2015)
Japanese game
The “Pokémon” series is one of the most critical channels for Japanese popular culture to pass to the West. It has a large number of loyal audiences and breaks the cultural barriers between Japanese media and American consumers. As early as the late 1990s, Pokémon became famous all over the world. Now that 20 years have passed since the birth of “Pokémon,” it has not fallen. (Finnegan, 2016)
Pokémon has been released for 24 years. During these 24 years, the Pokémon series has been updating its video games, T.V. series, movies, comics, and a large number of goods. Their effectiveness and sustainability are “unprecedented.”. According to Nintendo’s 2015 report, they sold more than 277 million video games around the world, with 69.95 million movie viewers, exceed 21.5 billion cards sold in 11 different languages to 74 different countries, and a T.V. show in 93 Broadcast in different countries and regions. Since landing in the United States in 1998, Pokémon appeared in the parade of Macy’s Thanksgiving Day and owned a store for it in New York. In 1999, Pokémon, on the cover of Time magazine and appeared in dozens of other T.V. series such as “The Simpsons” and “South Park,” Pokémon has become the central element of American popular culture. (Grubb, 2016)
Pokémon G.O. is one of the most successful mobile games around the world, breaking records in its first month of release, making it the fastest $100 million game in the world and the most downloaded. So far, it has generated nearly $2 billion in revenue and been downloaded 800 million times. It is also one of the most critical games in the world, and its success will have a significant impact on the design of augmented reality games for years to come. (Chamary, 2018)
Conclusion
Overall, the media and cultural hegemony of America are still deeply rooted in the hearts of people worldwide, and it still ranks first in terms of film, television, media, and other aspects. However, with the rapid development of Asia and other countries with a long history in recent decades, the Hegemony of America has been challenged in every aspect, including film, television, culture, and music. This picture of nations striving for development is what people want to see, both for the development of nations and for the development of the world. In the face of so many challenges from other countries, America will continue to develop and strengthen its hegemony, while other countries will also strive to rise and gain a place.

Informational Video
# SURVEILLANCE PART TWO
Wow! Finally uploaded my last video of this unit! 🎉 Also is my third YouTube video! It’s not an easy thing for me to get out of my comfort zone, from the nervousness when I made the first video to now I can smile at the camera easily and talk about my own ideas. Thank you ALM102! 😊
Content!
For this 7 minutes information video, I continue the topic of surveillance. In this video, I delve into whether the government’s massive use of surveillance endangers our privacy and freedom. This video is aimed at everyone, especially those who don’t know about surveillance, in fact, I didn’t know how extensive the surveillance was until I made the last video. So, i want to talk about how governments are using surveillance now, is it really protecting us? Can the terrorists be caught? Do we still have personal privacy? That’s what I want my audience to think about and come to a conclusion of their own.
Strategies!
Because of this video is an information video, it’s not just about talking about myself or speaking my mind. It takes a lot of searching, finding the right information and putting it all together. Before I prepared for the recording, I wrote a general plan of what each paragraph was going to say, where I was going to insert pictures or pictures, and so on. After making a general plan, I began to search a lot of information for this topic. It really took me a long time, probably a few days, but it was also because I did enough research that I was able to write the transcript very easily.
Yes, I used the transcript again, like I said before, I think this kind of informative video requires me to write my script in advance, because as a non-native English speaker, I don’t have the confidence that I can fully remember all of what I want to say. Another reason is compares with last two videos, 7-minute is a quite long time, I need to keep checking my scripts to remind myself.
For the lighting, after the last recording, I found that the natural light is much better than the light, so I chose to record with natural light this time. However, since I started recording at 4pm, and the recording time was much longer than I expected, you can see from my video that my light is dimming all the time. Even in the middle of my recording, the sunset started. So, I had to choose to use the light in the room to complete my recording. (I still want to explain why I started recording so late, because there’s an apartment building going up across the street, and I find that the world doesn’t get quiet again until the workers leave work at 4 pm every day.)
Everything went smoothly except the lighting, and I still used the rule of thirds to better show some pictures or videos, so that my audience could watch my videos more comfortably. By the way, the background of my recording is still the familiar white wall, because it is the only clean background in my room lol, I hope I can change the background or make some decorations for the next video.
Next I want to talk about the selection of appropriate source material, well, it’s not always easy to find the right copyrighted pictures and videos. It’s another part of spending a lot of my time, anyway, all of the sources you see in the video is copyrighted. Actually I also using some of the images that I used in the last video. I also found a nice background music from BenSound. Firstly, I don’t have to worry about the CreativeCommons license, and secondly, I wanted to use this music in the last video, so This time I just chose this music without any hesitation.
Lessons and Challenges!
The biggest challenge with this video was the lighting, As I mentioned before, so what do I need to do is get my light back to normal. Actually, I edit my video on my iPad, this is because after I updated my computer system, the editing software I used, Final Cut Pro, could not be used normally and I still don’t know why. 😫 Fortunately, using iPad to edit is also very easy and convenient. Because my videos are recorded separately, I can adjust the different effects and brightness for them. After adjusting various parameters, I tried my best to make them look like they were recorded in the same light. I realized again that I should spent more time preparing for each of my assignments so that I could make perfect videos.
So anyway, I am very satisfied with this video and enjoy every step of making this video. Thanks again for this unit ALM102! It really allows me to get out of my comfort zone and gain more making video skills. 💗
The invisible spies are eyeing you!
One day I was stand at the cashier of Coles and looked up at the security cameras, So I tried to count how many cameras there were on the way home, and that’s when I realized there was so much surveillance in our lives.
Content!
At the beginning of this video, I start with a quote from by David von Drehle to give my audience a general direction for this video and let them know what’s going to be discussed.
The goal of this video is briefly introducing surveillance in our daily life, the use of this technology and the potential danger of it. I’m also trying to get my viewers to pay attention to the security of smart devices in their homes (that’s why i called them invisible spies) , and thinking about the right of the government of surveillance and whether surveillance itself makes us safer.
Strategies!

Since this video is not about me and it needs some theories and research to support it, I choose to write a script in advance and design the content of each part, and this made it easier for me to record videos and memorize lines.
In order to make this video more interesting and not just like a boring “explanation” video, I plan to use many videos and pictures in this video. So, I’ve collected a lot of videos about surveillance and other scenes that I wanted. However, search you imagine Creative Commons videos on YouTube is not an easy thing.
For the lighting, this time I tried to use natural light which I think is better than my first video. The natural light makes my videos look more realistic and comfortable, however, I had to spend more time shooting because the natural light always changes with the weather and cloud.
With the experience of the first video, I remembered to use the rule of thirds this time, I opened the grid on my camera and tried to sit at the left, When I’m inserting videos and pictures, I really see the benefits, It splits my screen nicely into two parts and looks really comfortable and friendly.
Moreover, I found a background music from Free Music Archive to make sure it has a CreativeCommons license, I spent some time on this because I wanted to find a music that would make my videos sound more dynamic and modern.
Lessons and Challenges!
The biggest challenge with this video was that it required a lot of images and videos, which I had to insert into the right places, although editing this video was not a very difficult task, I was still annoyed by constantly adjusting the position of the video and pictures. What’s more, because I chose to shoot with my phone this time, this resulted in my video being of a different size, with a black border on the top and bottom of the screen.💔💔
Beyond that, I still find it difficult to plan a proper time and I had to cut out some clips due to my lack of time management. When I mentioned the importance of surveillance in catching criminals, I wanted to mention its importance in the 2013 Boston Bombings, but I had to delete it because I didn’t have enough time, that’s made me lost some cases in my video.
Overall, I am pretty satisfied with this video and proud of myself, well definitely, it could be better. I think I delivered the message that I want and hope I can start my video earlier next time…

Wow! First Youtube video!
Hi everyone! Finally i uploaded my first ever Youtube video, honestly, i never thought a 2 minutes video will be so hard for me!
That’s my first video, so i just plan to introduce a little bit of myself and Let the audience have a simple understanding of me. Because of i knew who is the audience of this video, so it is easy for me when i choose the content. The video is only up to two minutes, I think i should make my video simple and clear for audience’s to easy understanding, so I excluded my other interests and information which has less relation to my study and career aspirations. Therefore, I only picked up marketing as study, my career aspiration and use my Constellation to introduce my interest.
I also tried to make my video looks more authenticity, i think keep the content authenticity is doesn’t mean just not to script the video. To the contrary, i think make a good plan and script some point will make my video better. For me, i think the video’s “authenticity” means try to let the audience feel there is no distance with the people in the video, just like listening to a friend chat.
I am concerned about the background I present in the video because the audience has to pay attention to the speaker appearing in the video. Since my camera doesn’t have an external microphone, I have to make sure my background is very quiet which means i cannot record my video outside in case there has sudden noises, like cars or dogs barking.
I chose to record this video in my bedroom because my bedroom is well-lit and has a clean background. I put some object behind me to make sure that my background is not just a plain white wall also not messy. I also positioned just slightly to sit at right, using the rule of thirds to show my background which is a guitar and two toys. Moreover, I also tried smiling and waving to audiences, this might looks more friendly. For the lighting, i didn’t a professional equipment, so i just use my desk lamp and put my computer behind my camera, set the background of computer to white and i found is useful!😄
In order to make the video not too boring, i make a little beginning for the video. It was inspired by the funny things that happened when I was testing the camera, and I thought adding it to the video would make it more interesting. Also i found a background music from Digccmixter to make sure it has a CreativeCommons license.
Challenges!
When i started to recorded the video, the first challenge came which is nervous. I told myself to relax and just make a two-minute video, But I still keep forgetting what to say, and saying the wrong words. To overcome the difficulty of speaking on camera, I did a lot of rehearsals and asked my friends for advice. After a lot of practice, I finally finished the recording successfully.
Well, after filming all of the content that i want to talk, i found is almost 15 minutes, and it’s really difficult to cut into 2 minutes, it was very difficult to choose what you want to cut and what you want to remain. So next time, i must make my plan more clearly, and not just some important point.
Another challenging part of creating this video was when i tried to export this video and upload it to Youtube. I ran into some technical problems when I edited my video and wanted to export it, that’s also let me know why we must started our work earlier and Never leave it to the last minute, cause you never know when an accident might come:(
More than these few challenges, I am happy with my final video, and I really enjoy planning and editing a video, also learnt a lot from this task and
I learnt a lot from this task and enjoyed putting everything together in the final edit. I think that I am overall happy with what I have come up with and Get ready to record a new video, hope you enjoy to!

First podcast: social media with politics

In the first podcast that I upload: Episode 1: social media with politics is talk about “How Social Media Affects Politics in beneficial and problematic ways.” After a lot of searching, I’ve learned that social media has a huge impact on contemporary politics, there’s good and there’s bad, that’s always the way.
When I talk about the beneficial of social media, I mentioned two parts: for masses; for leaders. First, for masses, social media can make us get news anytime of the day and get connect with Political leaders in direct. For leaders, they can use social media to advertise themselves and more accountable and accessible to voters.
For the negative effects, I talked about there have many rumors and Fake News on the social media, also I give an example of “Cambridge Analytica”.
For my podcast, i divided 5 parts for my making process:
#1 Research:
Before I started making my podcasts, I did a lot of research, that’s because I don’t want to talk about something wrong or misleading content. I have read many journal articles, newspaper articles, websites and so on. To find out how many people are using social media now, I search a data from statista.com, which shows the number of global social network users 2010-2021. I also quoted a concept from Balamurugan, published in (2018) “we conclude that social media has greater impact on politics, and it has possibility of changing the long-term young generation behavior towards politics”.
#2 Planning:
After researching the basic information, I begin to design my podcast. Frist of all, I create dot point plan which includes the basic content that I want to talk. The dot point plan will keep my mind clear (I always forget what I’m going to say or what comes to my mind😓). Then I use the dot point to develop a script for myself, I found write a script is really important, In my experience, this is much more consistent than only looking at key points.
#3 Recording:
I use my phone to record my sound that’s because the sound quality of the phone is much better than I expected!🥰 In order to avoid some emergencies and sudden noise, I decided to record each paragraph then use the editing program to connect them after record all the podcast. Although it only has 5 minutes and I already practice a lot before the formal record, it still takes me many times to do it. 😢
#4 Editing:
For me, editing is not a difficult thing or is not so difficult than I thought. I used Audacity to edit my podcast, the most difficult thing for editing is connect my voice. As I said before, I record a lot of paragraph and try to connect them when I edit my podcast. However, that’s really took me a few hours. Moreover, I also chose a music from Ross Bugden for my musical intro and outro which I have found in Soundcloud.
#5 Publishing:
Finally, I finished all the work of making my podcast, it’s time to upload it! 😄I also use a picture from Jason Howie as my background to express the topic better.
So, that’s all about my Episode 1, through this experience, i already get some basic skills of making podcast, also i found making podcast is a very interesting things which can make me try to think about something and talk to others, please give me some comments and let me know what you think! 💗

Who you are behind the mask of online identity?
“On the internet, nobody knows you’re a dog.” That’s a famous adage and cartoon from “The new Yorker”, which means our online and offline identities can be totally different.
What is online identity?
Online identity can be anything from your internet, any social media account you have. Some people choose to use their real names online, some prefer to use anonymous or pseudonyms, which show different amounts of personally identifiable information. An online identity can even be determined by the social network to which the user belongs. Some users can even provide false information.
Is online identity being same with real life?
Online identity is like a mask which can cover who you are, what’s your job, where are you come from… In the network society, we put on a mask and become brave, just like when you go on stage, people always tell you to ignore the audience and ignore them.

As the Internet becomes a bigger part of our lives, we spend more and more time online. According to Roy Morgan(2018), there are 20.2 million Australians aged 14+, who each had 8,760 hours to spend over the last 12 months in 2018. That’s sound incredible, but that’s the truth, if you check your phone usage now, you’ll be even more surprised.
(As I wrote this, I also checked my phone usage time, i spend seven hours a day on my phone? why i spend 29h50m on WeChat??😱)
picture from nicole, 18 December 2019
We spend so much time to build our online identity, we can choose who we are, maybe a “bad” student is a famous YouTuber, a normal marketing officer can be a music blogger, a tattoo artist can also be a novelist… that’s sound really interesting isn’t it? 😊
My experience
From middle school, I began to use Weibo (like Chinese Facebook) rather than WeChat or some famous Chinese social media. The reason at the begging that I choose to use Weibo is I think that’s a place where I could share some aspects of my life without being discovered by my family members and friends.
However, as it’s getting more and more popular, many of my friends started using it even my sister. One day, my sister told me “I found you Weibo account and follow you!” wow, I just felt very embarrassed and nervous. 😅 That’s because I didn’t want to show her this side of me, you know there always have something you don’t want to talk with your family members. At that moment I thought “okay, it’s time to say goodbye with my secret garden. 💔
Back to today, because of I came to Melbourne to study, in order to better integrate into the local society, I started using Twitter, Facebook and Instagram. More importantly, I started building my online identity again. I think it is really important because that’s the most direct way for my foreign friends to know me. So, I always put some pictures and ideas about my own life to share with them. Besides, I found this a good channel to show our Chinese culture. Every time I go back to China, I will take some photos and upload them.
Protect your online identity
At this internet age, it is not only important to make our online identity, moreover, we need to pay more attention about our online privacy. According to Youn Seounmi(2009), More and more teenagers are also aware of the importance of protecting online privacy. That’s a really good thing for us, If people are aware of this from an early age, there will be less leakage of network information.
Identity theft:

Identity theft means deliberate use someone’s personal data or identity to obtain some financial advantage, credit or other advantage in the person’s name. that’s usually because we always put our important personal information like name, address, credit card number, etc. available online.
How can we protect our identity theft?
I have searched some tips for yours:
- Use strong passwords — never use simple passwords like 123456789 or your name and birthday; besides, do not use same passwords everywhere, that’s the dream of thieves.
- Update your security software — make sure your phone and computers have a latest software.
- Beware of public WIFI — I know that we all love using WIFI at some public area, however, there may have some virus and thieves behind the free WIFI. Make sure do not use public WIFI to do some financial transactions or enter any sensitive information.
- Check bank statements regularly— make sure there didn’t have any unusual transactions on your account. Criminals usually steal a small amount of money at first and empty your account if they are not caught.
In short, do you know anything about online identity now? Do you understand the importance of network security? I hope this blog can give you some help or ideas. Again, “On the internet, nobody knows you’re a dog.” So, who you are behind the mask of online identity? 💗
